Let’s define our future, together
As we absorb the impact of this election season, I know we’re all asking the same question: Now what?
What lies ahead for our rights, our voices, and our democracy? Given the alarming rhetoric we’ve witnessed, it’s clear the stakes are high — especially for issues that affect women and our allies disproportionately, around important issues like health care access, reproductive rights, economic security and fair representation.
The League of Women Voters’ answer to “now what” is clear: we double down. We are not disillusioned about the fight ahead. And we recognize that being hopeful can feel damn tough right now. In moments like this I lean on the poignant words and instruction of Mariame Kaba who said, “hope is a discipline toward freedom.”
We are prepared to fight to defend our democracy and the rights of women, people of color, and the LGTQIA+ community. We anticipate new challenges and threats that undermine the progress we’ve fought for over generations.
It is more urgent than ever that we invest deeply in civic education and engagement — community by community, state by state. Our democracy’s future is built on informed citizens, and we can’t afford to lose ground now.
The League remains steadfast in our commitment to advocate for policies that uplift targeted communities and ensure we protect democracy in this moment and the ability to attain equitable representation in all levels of government.
We can’t wait. We won’t be silent. Together, we’ll continue to educate, empower, and ensure that every voice has a chance to shape the future.
Thank you for standing with us when our democracy needs you most.
