ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) — With exactly one week to go until Election Day, North Carolinians are continuing to get out to vote.
Almost 1.3 million North Carolina residents, including more than 41,000 in Buncombe County, have already cast ballots in the 2022 General Election, according to theNorth Carolina State Board of Elections website.
The website shows that through Oct. 31, about 1.2 million of those participated in one-stop early voting and the remaining ballots were absentee by mail. And, about 52 percent of early voters have been women.
However, the number of options to vote is one less than it was a day earlier. The deadline to request an absentee ballot in Buncombe County was 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 1. Though you can no longer request an absentee ballot, those ballots will be accepted through Election Day.
Election officials said Buncombe County has issued about 10,000 absentee ballots, and a good many of those are ready to be counted.
“We’ve had almost 10,000 requested, and we’ve had a high percentage of them come back. So, we expect our absentee board meetings to be big,” Election Services Director Corinne Duncan said.
The counting of absentee ballots began at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
Though elections officials are happy with the overall election turnout, the number of ballots cast so far is slightly less than the numbers for 2018.
