NC Joint Redistricting Committee Public Hearing Schedule

The redistricting process has begun. It will determine the 16 districts for the United States Congress and the districts for the North Carolina General Assembly (House and Senate).

North Carolina has gained one Congressional representative and that makes this redistricting cycle more complex. The NC Joint Redistricting Committee has established a special portal for comments on the 2021 redistricting process. Members are urged to use this site to raise their concerns. This letter, cosigned by the League of Women Voters of North Carolina and ten other organizations, provides a wealth of information on expectations for a fair, transparent, timely, and inclusive process.

Redistricting Criteria

The Joint Committee has published it’s final criteria to be used for redistricting.

The League of Women Voters is concerned that racial data will not be used in the redistricting process. It will make it impossible to know if proposed districts are in compliance with the Voting Rights Act.

Redistricting Hearings

At present public in-person hearings on the redistricting criteria are scheduled to be held in only 10 of the 100 counties in North Carolina. No virtual hearings are planned. The hearings are to be held before maps are shared.

Holding hearings in only 10% of the counties in the state does not allow large numbers of citizens to easily participate. Having only in-person hearings during the ongoing pandemic forces citizens to choose between attending and their consideration of their own health and that of others. Individuals with mobility or transportation difficulties will be restricted in their attendance. Hearings should be held before and after proposed maps are published.
