Redistricting Criteria Comments DUE tomorrow, August 12th!

On Monday afternoon, August 9, the NC General Assembly (NCGA) Joint Redistricting Committee released their proposed criteria for drawing new legislative and Congressional maps.

At 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, August 10, they accepted limited in-person public comments, less than 24 hours after releasing the proposed criteria.

On Thursday afternoon, August 12, the committee will vote on the final criteria they will use in drawing maps this year – maps that will determine the shape of our elections in North Carolina for the next 10 years.

Please submit your comments on the proposed criteria as soon as possible, preferably by 8 pm, Wednesday, using the online portal here.

How to Comment

  1. See this NC Redistricting Criteria Public Comment Guide. The Guide includes a comment template, background into, plus specific suggestions for adding, changing, and clarifying map-drawing criteria, along with the criteria that the redistricting committee has proposed.
  2. Write out your comments, including specific suggestions for changes or additions.
  3. Go to the online portal and fill out the form: Request for Comments.

Fair election maps are crucial in a democracy.  We urgently need everyone to submit public comments on the map-drawing criteria. In North Carolina, the legislature has the sole power for drawing maps – not even the governor has veto power. And our legislature has a record of using that power for extreme partisan gerrymandering, which essentially allows sitting legislators to pick their voters instead of the other way around.
